The Prix de Rome is a Dutch ‘state prize’ for artists and architects living and working in the Netherlands under 35 years of age. The prize is intended to stimulate artistic development in an international context. It was originally inaugurated in 1808, but reignited at the end of the 1980s. The contest is organised by the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. The focus of the prize alternates between fields, with architecture (including urban planning and landscape architecture) being the focus once every four years. The nominated architect’s work is presented in an exhibition, which has over time been hosted by various institutions in the Netherlands.
Gouden Piramide
The Gouden Piramide [Golden Pyramid] is an annually awarded state prize for excellence in commissioning work in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, infrastructure and physical planning. The prize is open to municipalities, private individuals, companies, organisations, specialised building clients etc. The Gouden Piramide is a joint initiative of four Dutch ministries, including that of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (V en W).
Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prize [Prince Berhard Culture Fund Prize]
The Prince Bernhard Culture Fund awards ten prizes for achievements in the ten fields the Fund supports in general. Each prize has its own jury, with an in-depth field-specific knowledge and experience. The prizes for entire bodies of work are awarded once every three years. The fund inaugurated a prize for applied arts and architecture in 1993, with the aim to celebrate extraordinary achievements in those fields. The prize is accompanied by an amount of € 50.000 of which three quarters are expected to be invested in the advancement of the winner’s practice.
International
Archiprix
Every two years, Archiprix International highlights the best graduation projects in the world. All university programmes in the areas of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture are invited to select their best graduation projects and to submit it to Archiprix. An independent jury rewards the very best submissions with the Hunter Douglas Awards. The aim of the awards is to stimulate the introduction of talented designers who are starting out in the world of professional practice. The nominated projects are exhibited in a different city and country every two years.
Europan
The objective of Europan is to encourage Europe’s young architecture and urban design professionals, and to publicise and develop their ideas. Its objective is also to help cities and developers, which have provided sites for innovative architectural and urban solutions that enable the transformation of urban locations. Europan 10 is a European federation of national organisations, which manages architectural competitions, followed by building or study projects, launched simultaneously by several countries on common themes, objectives and rules. Europan is open to any team of young urban and architectural design professionals (architects, urban planners, landscape designers, engineers). Teams may also include young professionals from other disciplines. All candidates must be under 40 years old on the closing date for submission of entries.
Oeuvre Prizes
The Fonds BKVB has awarded a prize for lifetime achievements to artists, designers and architects with a significant track record and profile since 1992. Three awards are given out every two years: one to an artist, one to a designer and one to an architect whose work is of such standing that it deserves (renewed) attention. Each prize is accompanied by € 40,000.
