The subjects around which the DutchDFA programme will manifest itself, are brought together under four thematic headers: survival, renewal, identity and community.
Issues that will determine our future have generated these themes: globalisation (urbanisation, migration, economic instability, shifting cultural identities), and the need for sustainable development in the light of climate change, environmental issues and energy shortages. All of which are issues that have global relevance and to which designers can and must contribute.
Survival may include: sustainable building, building with water, social housing, environmental planning and infrastructure; the environmentally conscious and socially responsible production of clothing and other products; medical equipment, hygiene, water supply.
Renewal may include: the re-development of former industrial zones, preservation and reuse of cultural heritage; the linking of traditional crafts with new technology for contemporary markets; the application of new materials and techniques in housing, fashion and product development.
Identity may include: giving expression to new identities, connecting one’s own cultural traditions with today’s global culture in clothing, gadgets, furniture and interior design; the expression of identity in buildings, parks and city districts; the branding of individuals, organisations, companies and cities.
Community may include: the quality of public space, and the prevention of urban fragmentation; public and social housing; infrastructure and transport; visual communication in public space, signage, information design; new forms of (digital) interaction, websites, multi-user games.
