Pieter 't Hoen, better known as Piet Paris, is mostly known for his fashion illustrations, recognisable by their striking drawing style. His drawings show the essence of the catwalk show. "More than a picture you can leave out buttons or patterns when the silhouette is the striking thing," says Piet Paris (47).

Last spring half New York was addicted to Piet Paris, when warehouse Saks Fifth Avenue commissioned him to do a complete campagne. Eightteen drawings that show the seasons trends plus illustrations in which he turned four landmark buildings into catwalkmodels where the result. The Statue of Liberty wears a handbag, the Guggenheim museum is a strapless dress. Eventually all 54 warehouses from NY to Dubai devoted their entire interiors to Piet's illustrations. Billboards, buses and shopping bags.

In 1988 't Hoen graduated in Fashion design and Fashion illustration from the fashion department of the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design. "I wasn't a star in sowing arms onto a dress, so my graduation collection existed of strapless dresses." He wanted to become the next Frank Govers, but at the academy it was his drawing style that caught the eye. In 2000 an article in Stylishly drawn, contemporary fashion illustrated became his break-through.
't Hoen illustrates for newspapers and magazines in the Netherlands as well as Japan and England. His work has appeared in publications from Germany, Belgium, France and from the USA to Russia. The fashion shows of Paris and Milan are the source of inspiration for this work. Illustrators Dick Bruna (founder of Miffy) and Fiep Westendorp (Jip & Janneke) are grand examples. Using transparant sheets, a knife and paint, his collages are 100% handmade.

't Hoen is active in a lot of other fashionable activities. He is co-founder of the Fashion Institute Arnhem; a master course in fashion design. He also teaches about fashion illustration and 3-D design at several art academies.

Right now 't Hoen is creative director of the Arnhem Fashion Biennale; the premier edition of an international, interdisciplinary happening for the fashion design world to be held every two years in the city of Arnhem. It is already known as "the largest cultural festival on fashion in the world." Exhibitions, lectures, shows, a shopping route and workshops will this June inform a broad audience of fashion that for once is not about catwalks and champagne.
